Photo Techniques

Using Lines in Digital Photography

Have you ever looked around and realized how many lines there are? There are literally lines everywhere! Using these lines to your advantage in your photography can make your photos much better.

First off, as mentioned above, lines are everywhere. After some practice with photographing lines you’ll be able to take shots using the lines right without even taking much notice into it. Knowing how to capture these lines and shapes in a very appealing way that is visually delicious can make your shots much better.

When you are composing your photograph you will want to pay very close attention to the lines in your photo. Look closely at where the major lines of interest are leading to and if you actually want the viewer being lead there or not. See what you can do with the lines and how you can use them to make your photo much better.

Leading lines can be used very effectively. Leading lines are basically lines that lead somewhere. Think of the shots of the streets with lines that lead to a very small point. The strong lines will lead the viewer to wherever the lines lead towards. Have your strongest lines lead to your focal point of the photograph.

Horizontal Lines:
Horizontal lines are great when taking photos. These lines are usually described as relaxing and calming. Think of shots of the beach that are horizontal.

Vertical Lines:
Vertical lines are usually used very often for action and tension. Think of the difference between photographing a city from far away creating a horizontal look or photographing buildings from the ground and shooting up showing vertical lines.

Lines In People

Lines are everywhere and even on people. Although not exactly straight lines, the lines of people can be used very nicely. Look at where the arms lines point to or the legs point towards. Position them so that they provide some more to the image.

The best rule with photography is to keep your shots simple. Taking a shot with many cluttered and confusing lines can make for photos that aren’t interesting and just annoying to look at.

Taking Creative Photos

Photography is art. This is because of the creative part of it. However, photography is also very technical oriented as well. You see, photos have two distinct sides…

The Mechanical Side
This side of photo taking has the knowledge of how to use the camera, setting the right settings like ISO, aperture, etc, and other technical info like that.

The Artistic Side
This side of photo taking is where the photographer shows his or her creativity through different ways. The artistic side is what makes a photographer have different styles and ways of showing their message than all the others.

Because photography is not completely one or the other you must know both the mechanical and artistic side of taking photos in order to be a good photographer. The mechanical side is fine and will help you to be more artistic and expressive. However, having only mechanical skills in photography will make your photos boring and uninteresting. Also, having only creative skills but no technical knowledge will prevent you from expanding your horizons and being able to be fully expressive.

After getting good at the technical part you should work on the creative part. To get better at the creative side of photography first you should find out what your style is. Your photo style is very related to your personality. The style is the way you will convey your messages that you tell. If you have a magical style your photos may end up with a style that is very whimsical.

When you take a photo you want to have an idea of what you want to say in your photo. All great photos usually are taken because the photographer wants to say something. A photo is another language and way of communicating something. The hard part about this is finding what you want to say initially.

It will be hard thinking of what you want to say in your photos at first but after that first idea comes up more will come. After you get that idea then you can create the photo. This is where the technical skills will really help you fully convey your message with no limits.

Composing Great Digital Photos

Have you ever wondered what it was that made photos look so nice and other photos look so bad? Well…when it comes to making a photo look visually delicious a lot of it has to do with how you compose the image.

When it comes to taking great digital photos there are quite some things that come into play for this. However, let us narrow them down into three distinct sections.

Proper Lighting
The lighting is very important for photography. The way you light the photo is how the photo will end up looking. Lighting can make a setting, object, or person look scary, happy, sad, or other things as well. It can add power or take it away just as easily.

Technical Savvy
Knowing how to properly use your photo will make your photos much better. It’ll also give you much more freedom to experiment.

Photographic Composition
Composing great digital shots can be difficult at first but with some practice and experimenting you can get really good. Here are some tips for getting better:

-Get closer to the subject. Getting closer can make your photo much simpler. Cluttered photos are usually not pleasing to look at and a common mistake most beginners make.
-Avoid the Center. Placing your subject off center can make your photo much more interesting
-Use lines. Using the lines in your photo to lead to important things can make your photo much better looking and more powerful.

There are many different methods from which you can work on to get better at photographing. But of all of them, the best thing to do is get out there and practice the things you learn and experiment.
